The Ghan is a rail journey from Adelaide to Darwin (via Alice Springs). Its distance is 2,979 kms (1,846 miles) and its duration is three days, two nights (in either direction). The Ghan will take you from one edge of Australia through to the other, through the very centre of Australia. It was named after the Afghan cameleers who once travelled this route.
There are a number of service options when booking The Ghan. Having made the journey a number of times, here is a personal opinion on the benefits of each.
Plush Twin Mattress
Red Service Daynighter Seat
The cheapest way to travel on The Ghan. The seats are larger than a plane/bus seat and with more leg room, the carriage is air conditioned. You also have access to the Red Service Diner to relax with a meal, snacks or drink. If you choose to, you can bring your own cold packaged food. You have access to shared bathroom/shower facilities.
Seating is two abreast with the option to reverse the direction of the seats (to enjoy the company of the people behind you). Handy if there is four of you travelling.
If you are travelling in a seat, its worth breaking the trip in Alice Springs for a few days, it can be a long journey otherwise. Irrespective, it stops in Alice for a few hours on the way through. Bring a good book.
Red Service Sleeper Cabin
A small private cabin with two lounge seats that fold down to create two beds. Very small but it does allow you to lie flat to sleep.
The twin berth sleeper has a wash basin. Showers and toilets are located nearby at the end of each carriage. If you'd like a drink, snack, change of scenery or the chance to stretch your legs, you have full access to the Red Service Diner. Meals are available for purchase.
Personally, a bit small for my liking, you might consider the seats or saving up to travel The Ghan Gold Service, which includes the meals, which are excellent.
Gold Service Sleeper Cabins
During the day, The Ghan Gold Twin Cabins offer a comfortable three seater lounge, this converts to an upper and lower sleeping berth at night which includes fresh sheets, bath towels, pillows, doonas and complimentary toiletries. The Gold Twin Cabins have private en suite facilities with a hide-away compact toilet, wash basin and shower.
Gold Service Single Cabins feature a comfortable lounge chair and foot rest by day and a single level sleeping berth by night. Cabins are fitted with a wash basin.
NOTE - Showers and toilets are located at either end of the Gold Service carriage for the Single Cabins.
The dining is outstanding. Gold and Platinum Service passengers meals are served in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. This includes full breakfasts, two course lunches and three course dinners. There is also the Outback Explorer Lounge, this is ideal for socialising with your fellow travellers, relaxing, reading or just enjoying the scenery.
Worth noting that if you get two single cabins side by side you can open the doors for a chat. You may consider this to avoid one of you having to climb to the upper bunk (of the twin share).
Platinum Service Cabin
New spacious private cabins complete with plush, high quality fittings and en suite. Larger cabins and the double or twin beds are both ground level (so no bunk bed to climb into). Plenty of space to entertain, rooms also feature oversized panoramic window in your cabin. Quality, spacious, full service. As you would expect you pay for it accordingly.
Still enjoy the outstanding fine dining of the Queen Adelaide Restaurant (included).
Private Carriages
If there is six or more of you travelling its worth considering booking one of the private carriages. It can cost similar to the Gold Service but with the added luxury of your own exclusive carriage, perfect for a group of family, friends or business associated.
The carriages include the historic Prince of Wales Carriage, originally built in 1919 to accommodate a royal visit from Edward, Prince of Wales. As well as the Governor's Lounge, this timber carriage was constructed in 1917 for the official opening of the Trans Australian Railway.
The carriages are well fitted with some featuring ornate wooden carvings, as well as leather lounges, large picture windows, big screen TV, DVD/video, boardrooms.
Dine in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant or arrange to be served in your carriage.
Irrespective of what service you travel, The Ghan is an iconic train journey and renowned throughout the word. It offers unsurpassed views of Australia from North to South.
The Ghan travels from The Adelaide - Alice Springs - Darwin (or vice versa). It stops at Katherine for a whistle stop tour of the town or the Katherine Gorge (highly recommended). It also stops at Alice Springs where whistle stop tours are also available. A journey on The Ghan is a great way to travel to the two jewels of Australia's Northern Territory - the Red Centre and the tropical Top End.
