Mattresses - When to Replace

Chances are if you are still using the same mattress that you took with you when you moved out of your parents home, of if it has moved with you more than once, it's time to get a new mattress. It doesn't matter if you have a large bed and only sleep on one side, you still need to replace your mattress after a few years.

Experts say that you should get a new mattress every 7-10 years. There are a lot of risks that come with old mattresses such as uneven support and a collection of allergens and dust mites. As we get older - along with our mattresses - our bodies become more sensitive to pressure points such as springs or uneven sections. You can only flip that mattress so many times, and a mattress topper only does so much, so even if you haven't noticed a change in your mattress you still need to replace it.

Mattresses are made from lots of different materials like cotton, wool, latex or foam, so there are a lot of options available for you to choose from. Some manufacturers use a couple of different materials to give added support and comfort, so it is important to ask what a mattress is made out of before buying it. The ultimate "feel" you will get from your mattress also depends upon the way that your materials are layered and sewn together. If you buy a mattress that is "tufted", it will usually feel firm, but a mattress that has a diamond quilting is generally much softer and cushion-like. The outer covering of the mattress also makes a big difference in how it feels. If cotton or nylon is used, the mattress generally offers more support and can sometimes feel "hard", but a mattress that is covered in damask will be more soft and plush.

There are a lot of things to consider when you are shopping for a mattress so you can compare the various features offered by the different types. Do you want a mattress that offers a lot of support or something that will be softer and bouncier? What about allergies - is that a concern? There are mattresses that are certified to be allergen free.

What about size - do you want a twin, full, queen, king or California king? If you are an adult and are still sleeping on a twin mattress from your childhood, it's time to upgrade to a full or queen size bed. If you share your bed with a special someone, it might be time to upgrade from a full or queen to a king or California king sized mattress.

There are so many new developments in the technology and design of mattresses today, so it would be in your best interest to do some research and see what's available for you now. It's time to get rid of your friends the dust mites and get a brand new bed today! Now that you know the facts, you shouldn't go another night sleeping on that tired, old mattress.
